Origin Notes and History:

Decision in 18th Report. Named by Sir James Hector for a member of the English Branch of our family. Vaux was a friend of Sir James Hector and it was in the former's chambers in London that many of the reports of the Palliser Commission were prepared. Pronunciation from George Vaux, Gulph Road, Bryn Meur, Pennsylvania, March 6, 1942, file 0113. Our family is of Norman origin, having come to England with the conquest, using the name de Vallibus, or de Vaux and the latter form of the name became anglicized. The pronunciation of the name which we use and approve both for the English branch of the family, and for the American branch which issued from it, is made to rhyme with "Hawks".
