Adopted by Geographical Board of Canada 18 September 1913 on Ottawa files OBF 0025 and 0029, as labelled on Geological Survey sheet 767, Crows Nest Coal Fields, 1902. Re-adopted 6 February 1934 on Ottawa file OBF 1440, and 12 December 1939 on 82/SE.

Named in 1883 by Dr. Dawson, after Michael Phillipps ( -1916), a pioneer of the 1860's in this portion of BC. He had given Dr. Dawson much information about southeastern BC and was immortalized in a gallicized form of his Christian name. (3 March 1964 letter from J.K. Fraser, Geographic Board of Canada, quoting information from James White, Chief Geographer, c1908. For alternate origin see Michel (railway point).
