Named in October 1863 by Captain Pender, RN, the 9th anniversary of the immortal Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava in the Crimea, 25 October 1854. The brigade, numbering about 600 men, was led by Lord Cardigan against a Russian force numbering 30 guns and 4000 men. The charge was successful, but the guns could not be held, and only a remnant of the brigade returned to the British lines. Also Raglan Point, Cardigan Rocks, Scarlett Point and Nolan Point.
