Joseph Burrill left Yorkshire in 1893; arrived on Galiano Island in 1896 and bought 80 acres at the southeast corner of the island. Older brother, Frederick, came out in 1899 to help run the farm they established. Opened a general store in 1903; this building later became their feed-shed, when they built a larger store which still stands today (although moved to another location and much altered). The Burrills sold their store in 1947. Both Fred and Joe lived to a ripe old age....(A Gulf Islands Patchwork, BC Historical Association, 1966, p.136, 137, 154, including photographs of Fred and Joe Burrill.)
