Dr. Robert Brown, reporting on his explorations on Vancouver Island in 1864, mentions the beautiful tract of country extending past the Quall-e-hum River. In other early accounts the name is also spelled Quallchum. The name is derived from a Nanaimo term for 'place of the dog [chum] salmon'.
