Adopted 7 December 1937 on 92G/13 as appears in 1930 Gazetteer, labeled on Reference Map I.E.M. "Kootenay, Osoyoos, and Smilikameen Mining Divisions" (1915) and on Reference Map 4C "Cranbrook" (1936). Named in association with Skookumchuck Mountain.

"Skookumchuck" recorded as meaning "turbulent water" or "rapid torrent" in Chinook trade language. "Skookum" recorded as meaning strong and "chuck" recorded as meaning water.
