Named after Prince Edward (1894 - 1972), the Prince of Wales, first son of King George V.

After the death of his father in January 1936, Prince Edward ascended to the throne as King Edward VIII; he abdicated the throne in December 1936 to pursue his relationship with the twice-divorced Mrs. Wallace Warfield Simpson. In 1937, Edward was created Duke of Windsor and married Wallis Simpson in a ceremony in France.
