Prideaux Haven [sic] presumably named by Captains Richards or Pender, when surveying these waters for the Admiralty in 1860 and 1864, respectively. Significance of the name not known. Because of their choice of the poetic "Haven" as part of the name of this anchorage, Prideaux Haven is understood to be a mis-spelling of the French prie-dieux, literally "pray God" but also commonly referring to a kneeling bench used by a person at prayer.
