Named in 1792 by Commanders Galiano and Valdes, aboard the Spanish exploring vessels Sutil and Mexicana, in honour of Don Vicente Tofiño, rear admiral in the Spanish navy; King's Hydrographer 1784-88; appointed director of the Spanish Naval Academies in 1787.
