Origin Notes and History:

McMurdo (post office) initially adopted (date not cited) as labeled on Reference Map 1ER "Kootenay, Osoyoos, SImilkameen Kand Districts and Land Recording Divisions" (1915). 3 April 1952 feature type change to Post Office and Railway Station as listed in 1930 Gazetteer. Post Office closed 2 November 1953 (L.I. 2605557, Ottawa File #38460-S). McMurdo (Railway station) adopted 2 October 1958 to reflect feature type change. Likely named in association with McMurdo Creek. May have previously been labeled as Mons or Mallet (P.O./station)

W.R. Young notes "McMurdo Station... named after a Mr. Murdo, a miner from Golden who discovered a mine on the creek bearing his name in 1888.

According to Major Nation BC Mines Department the ore from McMurdo Mine was brought down from the mine and shipped by rail from McMurdo Station. According to 1971 census data the population of McMurdo (station) was 161. The population was not recorded in 1976 and 1981 Censuses.
