"Named in 1861 by Captain Richards, HMS Hecate; after Dr. Poett, an English physician of means, who had a medical practice in San Francisco and who visited Victoria, 1860-61. He interested himself largely in copper claims on Copper Island, Barkley Sound, hence the name of Copper Island."
