Tochquonyalla Mountains identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, as labelled on topographic plan 3T255, Range 4 Coast District, drawn by Frank Swannell, BCLS, 1920-21-22. Form of name changed to Tochquonyalla Range 7 September 1950 on 93E, as identified in Bostock's "Map of the Canadian Cordillera."

Horetzky, in his 1877 report for Canadian Pacific Railway, p.178, identifies Tochquonyalla Lake [now known as Surel Lake]; an 1874 panoramic photo of the lakes to accompany the CPR surveys spells the name as Tochquonyala Lake (advice about the handwritten photo label provided 5 November 1976 by Andy Birrell, National Photograph Collection, Public Archives of Canada.)
