Adopted 6 October 1936 on Geological Survey sheet 422A, Hope, as labelled on 1917 map "Okanagan Lake Valley" and 1931 map "Sumallo and Upper Tulameen Valleys" both by R.D. McCaw, BCLS, and on BC Lands' 1933 map of British Columbia.

Tamihi is the Halkomelem name for Mount McGuire. According to Dr. Brent Galloway, the name means 'deformed baby finishes.' Such infants were sometimes left exposed on the mountain to die."
