Named in 1859 by Captain Richards, RN, and officers of the Plumper, after Captain James Murray Reid, for 28 years in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company. Born 15 October 1802. Native of the Orkney Islands. He came out to this coast in 1852 in command of the Company's brigantine Vancouver, but was not long engaged trading here when she unfortunately ran [aground] on Rose Spit, QCI, in August 1854, bound from Victoria to Port Simpson.... and subsequently set afire and burnt. After the loss of his vessel, Captain Reid engaged in mercantile pursuits in Victoria, residing there until his death 24 April 1868. (see Colonist 6 April 1861 for description of the burning of the brig Vancouver)
