Origin Notes and History:

Adopted 3 October 1973, as submitted by Robert Kriszyna; follows the Herman Melville-associated naming theme established in 1958-59 by the Silverstein-Anger climbing party, Alpine Club of Canada. Omoo is the name of a book by the American writer Herman Melville. Omoo means "a person who wanders" and is from the dialect of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia in the South Pacific Ocean which is the locale of the book. "Omoo" is the second book written by Herman Melville; the first American edition published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1847, was titled "Omoo: A Narrative of Adventures In The South Seas."
