"Burial Point" named in 1858 by Captain Richards, referring to this feature opposite Burgoyne Bay; at the same time Richards' named the promontory at the entrance to Sansum Narrows just 3 1/2 miles northwest of here "Grave Point" ; both features are correctly labelled on Admiralty Chart 2689, published in 1859. Captain Richard's second chart of the area, British Admiralty Chart 2840, published in 1861, incorrectly identifies BOTH features as "Grave Point". Subsequent editions of British Admiralty charts revert to Richards' original naming scheme, ie. label this particular feature as "Burial Point". Canadian Hydrographic Charts from 1926 onward label this feature as "Octopus Point". The 1930 BC Gazetteer contains 2 entries for the same feature: "Burial Point...SE of Maple Bay" and "Octopus Point (not Grave Point)...opposite Burgoyne Bay".
