Origin Notes and History:

North Thompson River adopted 23 April 1912 for Dominion Sectional sheet 111, Kamloops, as labelled on Geological Survey sheet 557, 1895 (Ottawa file OBF 0022). Re-approved 11 August 1921 for Geological Survey publication #1945 (Summary Report 1921, Pt.A, p.72).

Identified as North River in Canada Gazette, 14 October 1865, p.7. Subsequently designated North Branch of Thompson River; labelled "Thompson River, North Branch" on Pemberton's 1871 map of British Columbia. [see Thompson River for biographical detail about namesake David Thompson.]
