W.S. Mathews had suggested "Lovely Water Creek" in association with the well-established name for the lake at the head of the creek, but BC advised that "Tantalus" would be more suitable, in association with nearby mountainous features (letter April 1941, file S.3.51). Tantalus Creek is the established local name according to 1957 advice from E.R. McMinn, BCLS.
