Spius means "wrung" or "twisted" (information provided by someone from Spences Bridge, 1917).

It appears that Spius Creek was known as Petit Creek locally but was officially named Spius being the Native name. Out of respect for Vincent Petit who died in 1889 at age 78, [a nearby] creek was given his name [see Petit Creek].
