Spences Bridge (Post Office & Station) adopted in the 1930 BC Gazetteer. Form of name changed to Spences Bridge (Post Office) 6 October 1936 on 92I. Form of name changed to Spences Bridge (community) 28 February 1983 on 92I/6.

Early name was Cook's Ferry, referring to Mortimer Cook who operated a ferry across the Thompson River here, approximately 1862-1865. Thomas Spence built a toll bridge here c1864. Spence's Bridge Post Office was opened 17 June 1868.
