Origin Notes and History:

Waneta (Post Office & Station) adopted 2 June 1950 on 82F/4, as labelled on BC map 4A, 1912 et seq, and on Mineral Reference Map 5, 1930, and as identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer. Form of name changed to Waneta (Station) 6 December 1951 on Columbia River Basin manuscript 13 (file C.2.49). Decision on MS 13.

Waneta Post Office opened 1 May 1893 located just north of Canada-US border. Great North Railroad (Nelson-Fort Sheppard Branch) opened c1908?; customs post opened here (date not cited). Waneta Post Office closed 31 July 1950. Great Northern R.R. track & rolling stock acquired by Burlington Northern Railway Company c1965.
