Local name is Piper Lagoon according to February 1983 advice from Municipal Planning Department, although not known how long that name has been used, or what the significance of "Piper" is/was. A 19-acre site here was purchased by the provincial government, deeded to the City of Nanaimo, and identified as "Piper Lagoon Park" in Press Release, 1 February 1983 (file N.1.51)

Victoria Whaling Company established a whaling station here c1907; the venture was not successful, nor was a subsequent venture to convert dogfish to fertilizer (which operation closed after a single season). The factory was dismantled and transported to Moresby Island, and rebuilt at Rose Harbour in 1910. (from B.C.Whaling by Peter Trower; Raincost Chronicles; Harbour Publishing, 1976, pp.93-98)
