Adopted 14 January 1946 on C.3450, as labelled on British Admiralty Chart A2840, 1861, following a survey conducted by Captain Richards and officers of the Plumper, 1858-1860.

These island may have been named after Sir Thomas Dyke Acland (1787-1871), British politician and philanthropist.

Note that one Lieutenant Edward Ackland joined the Royal Navy in July 1806 and served on the Orestes, Thalie (1807), Impregnable (1812 or 1813) and the Insolent. He served with the Coast Guard 1831-34, but was no longer with the Royal Navy when these islands were named, nor was any other "Acland" on the Royal Navy list at the time.
