Adopted 24 November 1980 on 104G/10 as submitted by the Geological Survey of Canada (L.I. 15 November 1979). Initial sumbission was held, pending investigation, as of 2 January 1980, before being approved.

Name is recorded as being derived from Tahltan words "Ten" (ice) and "Chen" (dirty). This name was deemed fitting because the glacier is completely covered by rock debris fallen from the steep headwall and bounding spurs.
