Adopted 13 March 1947 on 92F/12; submitted in 1938 by N.C. Stewart, BCLS, as a new name in association with nearby Thelwood and Upper Thelwood Lakes.

Thelwood and Upper Thelwood Lakes were labelled on BC map 2A, 1913, likely named for Thelma Wood, wife of then-MLA J.G. Cory Wood (Alberni) who had toured the park in 1912.
