"...locally known as Hudson Bay Mountain..." (BC Mines Report 1905, p.116); so-identified in 14 March 1911 letter from A.H. Whitcher to Geographic Board of Canada; so-labelled on BC map 3D, 1919, and on Geological Survey sheet 368A, Smithers, 1936. "...this is invariably referred to as Hudson Bay Mountain. The name would appear to apply to the one massive feature and not to the individual peaks, hence it is suggested that the singular form is more appropriate...." (1939 names list for Geological Survey map, where name is applied from Trout (Sheedy) Creek south to Telkwa River, and Bulkley River west to the valleys of Pine Creek, Aldrich, Dennis & Hankin Lakes. On more recent maps the name has been applied south of Silvern & Toboggan Creeks.

A well-established local name, referring to the mountain's proximity to a ranch once owned by the Hudson's Bay Company at nearby Driftwood Creek.
