"Named by officers of the Hudson's Bay Company c1852, because a tribe of Indians had recently quitted the bay, and by reason of it being a good place from which shipping could depart. Indian name "Tslalup", meaning "country around Nanaimo"." (April 1859 correspondence from B.W. Pearse F/13-4/59-1) (note that BC card does not specify which Archive this accession number refers to).
