Named after the Right Honourable Lester Bowles Pearson (1897-1972), Canada's 18th Prime Minister, 1963-68. Previously Secretary of State for External Affairs, 1948-58, president of the General Assembly of the United Nations, 1952-53, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957, for his efforts to resolve the Suez Crisis. As prime minister, he introduced a comprehensive pension plan, socialized medicine, and the maple-leaf flag.
