Named in 1847 by Lieutenant Commander James Wood, after Edward David Ashe, RN, 5th Lieutenant, HMS Fisgard under Captain John A. Duntze. Ashe was on this station 1844-1847; Lieutenant 1842; Commander 1865; retired 1866; died 1895.
