Originally labelled "Reef Point" on British Admiralty Chart 573, 1862 et seq. Renamed by Canadian Hydrographic Service in 1939 after Mr. Mark Bate, JP at Nanaimo, 1906, and the city's first mayor. Mr. Bate held many of the 1852-53 Hudson's Bay Company despatch logs and copies of Governor Douglas' correspondence regarding the coal fields at Nanaimo, and these were made available to Captain Walbran in 1906 when he was researching his book "British Columbia Coast Names".
