Adopted 31 March 1924 on 92G/4 as listed in the 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1915, and 1924 Gazetteers and as labeled on Chart 3523 "Plans on the East Coast of Vancouver Island" (1905). In lieu of original paperwork this name was reconfirmed 2 October 1953.

Named after Joanna (Joan) Olive Dunsmuir (nee White; 1827-1908), daughter of Alexander White and widow of Robert Dunsmuir. The couple lived on Vancouver Island.
