After James Scott Mitchell, a 17-year old survey assistant who was drowned near here while packing in supplies for a survey party in 1937.

Ruth Masters, Comox & District Mountaineering Club suggests that Mount Mitchell (about 15 miles north near Mount Albert Edward) was named for the same person, however Norm Stewart, BCLS, who named the mountain in 1935 said the namesake was Mr. J.M. Mitchell of Courtenay.
