This is a natural volcanic dam which retains the Garibaldi Lake system: "....a spectacular cliff 1/2 mile long and up to 800 feet high..." (Ice-Dammed Lavas from Clinker Mountain, by W. H. Matthews, published in American Journal of Science, August 1952, p.559).
