Origin Notes and History:
Adopted 2 March 1948 on 82 F/6 as labelled on 1902 survey plans for Lots 5375 - 5379 (Field Books 492/02 ph79, 491/02 ph79, 490/02 ph79, 238/02 ph78 and 239/02 ph78, respectively), and as labelled on Geological Survey sheet 791, West Kootenay, 1904, and on BC Mineral Reference Map 4, Nelson & Trail Creek, 1929. Subsequent field check confirmed that the northerly fork is the headwaters branch; altered application (headwaters only) 5 March 1959 on 82F/SW, applying to the north fork, as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915.

The Porto Rico and other mineral claims were staked on the southerly fork in 1896, presumably giving rise to the name "Porto Rico Creek" as might have been identified on one or more early maps (titles/dates not cited). Labelled "Barratt Creek" on BC Lands' Map of the West Division of Kootenay District, 1897. Labelled "Burnette Creek" on Department of Agriculture Map of Southern Portion of East & West Kootenay District, 1898, by W.S. Drewry, DLS, and on BC Lands' Map of East & West Kootenay, 1902 & 1911. Labelled "Delta Creek" on Railway plan 9T81, Nelson & Ft. Sheppard Line, GNRy (date of plan not cited). Spelled "Burnett Creek" on BC map 4B, 1912. "Barrett Creek (not Delta Creek)" identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer. Significance of "Delta" and spelling variations "Barratt/Burnette/Burnett/Barrett" not recorded.
