Named after George Barnston, clerk in the employ of the HBC. Formerly with the Northwest Company, he joined HBC upon amalgamation. Barnston, Annance and Manson were the three HBC clerks that accompanied James McMillan on his 1827 expedition to establish Fort Langley.
