Named c1860 by Captain Richards, RN. Understood to be a long-standing misinterpretation or misprint for "Carew", after Sir Benjamin Hallowell Carew (1760-1843), one of Nelson's admirals; named at the same time as Nelson Island, Mount Hallowell, etc.
