Adopted 5 Feburary 1924 as labelled on British Admiralty Chart 579, 1865 et seq, and on BC map 2B, 1914.

Named c1859 by Captain Richards, RN, after HMS Britannia, 100 guns, built at Portsmouth in 1792 - the 3rd ship of that name in the British navy - which was in the battle of St. Vincent, 1797, and at Trafalgar, 1805.
