Capt. Walter George Gosse (1900-1964), born at Vancouver but raised in Victoria, was a well-known pilot on the BC Coast. He was the son of Capt. Josiah Gosse (1865-1938), from Nfld, who came to the W coats about 1886, served on Skeena R steamers and other craft, then was employed for many years by the Canadian Pacific Navigation Co as BC’s first licensed pilot. Walter Gosse married Violet Francis Keenan at Vancouver in 1925. He joined the BC Pilotage Assoc in 1937, became BC’s senior pilot and president of the National Pilotage Assoc, and was a former president of the Canadian Merchant Seamen’s Guild. He worked on the coast until his sudden death while returning home from a maritime conference in Nfld. E.
