From the Salish name 'kwol quitz' or 'kol kol ish' meaning 'baby crying and crying until it is exhausted, and no one going to comfort it'. There was a legend about this, but the owner [of the story] died so it has been forgotten. Probably refers to the sound of water rushing along its path (18 October 1962 advice from Esquimalt Hereditary Chief Edward Joe).
