"Named by Sir James Douglas, where he first landed from the Beaver in the vicinity of what is now Victoria, and named the point from the fact a large area of ground was found covered with a species of red clover, growing most luxuriously." [the white rhizomes of indigenous perenial clover were a nutritious vegetable for First Nations and large patches were tended like gardens, hence the lush appearance that Douglas noticed.]
