Named in 1905 by Captain John F. Parry, HMS Egeria, while surveying Porlier Pass, after Dionisio Alcala Galiano, an officer in the Spanish Navy, engaged exploring this coast in 1792. (See also Walbran's British Columbia Coast Names)
