Origin Notes and History:

Siwash Lake was adopted 30 November 1982 on 93 B/3; the local name as reported by BC Fish & Wildlife staff. Name changed to Anah Lake 9 January 1989 on 93 B/3. Name changed 11 March 2019 to Benchuny as recommended by Tŝilhqot’in National Government, as Benchuny is the Tŝilhqot’in name for this lake, and supported by the Cariboo Regional District, BC Parks, and Recreation Sites and Trails.

Benchuny is the Tŝilhqot’in proper noun referring to this lake, as well as the wider locality around the the lake. Sometimes written as "Ben-chuny" or "Benchuny Biny" - "biny" meaning 'lake' (Advice from Tŝilhqot’in National Government, 2018).
