The name refers to its' shape. In 1988, McBride Municipal Council received a development proposal for a ski hill here, to be called "Belle". After initially supporting the commercial interest's play on the word, Council endorsed the historic spelling "Bell" in 1992. (Also Little Bell Mountain).
