Had been labelled "Bear Lake" on Trutch's 1871 map of British Columbia and on Geological Survey map of the Cariboo Mining District, by Amos Bowman, 1887, and on BC Lands' map of Central District of Cariboo, 1898. Labelled "Bowron (Bear) Lake" on BC Lands' maps 3G, Quesnel, 1914, and 1G, 1916.

After John Bowron (1837-1906), overlander of 1862 from Huntingdon, Quebec, thence across the plains and through Yellowhead Pass to the goldfields at Barkerville. Bowron was appointed Postmaster at Barkerville, 1866; mining recorder, 1872; government agent 1875; gold commissioner 1883; retired 1906; died later that year at Victoria.
