Masset (Community) adopted in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, located at 54° 01' x 132° 09'. Form changed to Masset (Post Office) 6 February 1948 on C.3805. Incorporated as a Village Municipality 11 May 1961. Application altered 30 November 1982, to 54° 01' x 132° 06' on 103K/1.

Massett Post Office was opened 1 August 1909. Spelling adjusted to Masset Post Office 28 May 1948.

The Haida name is/was Uttewas, "white slope" in the Masset dialect, probably referring to a small hill at the southern end of the village.
