Adopted 14 July 1975 on 92 F/4 as submitted by Ken Gibson, Tofino.

So-named in 1791 by Captain Robert Gray, of the "Columbia", the first ship to visit here, arriving in the fall of 1791. Captain Gray built the vessel "Adventure" here, only the 2nd vessel to be constructed on the Pacific northwest coast.
