Alta Lake Post Office was opened 1 February 1915 at Lot 2110, subsequently relocated to Lot 1757. Renamed Whistler Post Office 1 April 1976, in association with the internationally-known Whistler Mountain nearby. The surrounding area subsequently incorporated as Whistler Resort Municipality.

The resort destination is marketed as "Whistler-Blackcomb". Whistler Mountain and associated lifts/ski runs/alpine trails are located on the west side of Fitzsimmons Creek; Blackcomb Peak and associated lifts/ski runs/alpine trails are located on the east side of Fitzsimmons Creek.
