Birken (Post Office & Station) adopted 6 September 1951 on 92 J, as labelled on BC map 3K, 1920 et seq. Birken (Post Office) identified in the 1966 BC Gazetteer. Form of name changed to Birken (Railway Point) 31 May 1982 on 92 J/7; further changed to Birken (Locality) 31 March 1983 on 92J/7.

Birken Post Office opened 1 November 1920, named in association with Birkenhead River and Lake; closed 16 January 1970. At the time of closing, the post office was situated on L1171, 285 yards west of the PGER station.
