Named c1859 by Captain Richards, RN, in association with Russel Reach, presumably after the House of Bedford, OR perhaps after George A. Bedford, rear admiral, and/or Edward J. Bedford (1810-1887), vice admiral - brothers who were associated with the surveying branch of the Royal Navy for many years.
