"....named in honour of the Honourable Eric Werge Hamber, Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia 1936-41. British Columbia has been singularly fortunate in the calibre of the men who have been the sovereign's representatives, and E.W. Hamber was among the best. After he became chancellor of the University of British Columbia in 1944 he endeared himself to the faculty by throwing a wonderful party at the Hotel Vancouver.
